Vinge Wins 2020 Heinlein Award

Locus Magazine, Science Fiction FantasyVernor Vinge is the winner of the 2020 Robert A. Heinlein Award, given for “outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space,” recognizing his body of work, including nine novels, more than 24 short stories, and many non-fiction articles. The award is administered by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS).

The winner was chosen by a committee of SF authors chaired by Michael F. Flynn, and will receive a plaque, a sterling silver medallion, and two lapel pins, all featuring the likeness of Robert A. Heinlein. The award will be presented May 22, 2020 at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore MD during the opening ceremonies of Balticon 54.

    Excellent choice. Dr. Vinge is that rare scientist who can both think extraordinary thoughts and write those thoughts down on paper for the benefit of those not quite as extraordinary.

    My only problem with Vernon Vinge is that he does not write enough.
    It’s about time to re-read “Rainbows End”.

    The world needs Zones of Thought 4, and a Rainbows End sequel, badly.

    But it seems he’s done writing, eh? 🙁
