2025 HWA Summer Scares
The Horror Writers Association (HWA) has announced their Summer Scares Reading list for 2025.
Adult Books:
- Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes, Eric LaRocca (Titan)
- Reprieve, James Han Mattson (Morrow)
- The Luminous Dead, Caitlin Starling (Harper Voyager)
Young Adult Books:
- Devils Unto Dust, Emma Berquist (Greenwillow)
- The Getaway, Lamar Giles (Scholastic)
- Find Him Where You Left Him Dead, Kristen Simmons (Tor Teen)
Middle Grade Books:
- Eerie Tales from the School of Screams, Graham Annable (First Second)
- Ravenous Things, Derrick Chow (Hyperion)
- Hide and Seeker, Daka Hermon (Scholastic)
The program, now in its seventh year, is run in partnership with Booklist, Book Riot, iRead, and NoveList. ‘‘Summer Scares aims to introduce horror titles to school and public library workers, helping them start conversations with readers that go beyond the books on each year’s list and to encourage a lifelong love of reading.’’
Kendare Blake is this year’s author spokesperson. This year’s resources will include a programming guide and events for librarians and educators, including a Middle-Grade webinar on March 10, a Young Adult webinar on March 20, and an Adult webinar on March 24.
The Summer Scares committee and featured authors will be present at the HWA’s Librarians’ Day, with an in-person event on June 13 as part of StokerCon in Stamford CT.
