CAN*CON 2023

Can*Con 2023 was held October 13-15 online and in person at the Sheraton Hotel in Ottawa, Canada. Guests of honour were Nivia Evans, Fonda Lee, Sara Megibow, and Annalee Newitz.

In-person programming fea­tured 95 panelists at around 50 sessions, discussing science, writ­ing, literature, and more, such as ‘‘Disability in Sci-Fi and Fantasy: Worldbuilding for Disabled He­roes’’ with Melissa Blair, Cait Gor­don, Ada Hoffmann, and A.D. Sui; ‘‘Spotlight on Québec Sci-Fi and Fantasy’’ with Nathan Fréchette, Mélodie Joseph, Mathieu Lauzon-Dicso, Pascal Raud, and Su J. Sokol; and ‘‘Climate, Infrastructure and Gentrification’’ with Ariel Kroon, Premee Mo­hamed, Annalee Newitz, and Mark Robinson; plus pitch sessions with agents and editors. Ten panels were also streamed online. Additional options included book launches, signings, and writing workshops.

The dealers’ room had around 28 vendors including Bakka Phoenix, Wolsak & Wynn, Atthis Arts, and Stelliform Press, with goods like books, jewelry, dice, and accessories.

Two separate Can*Con events are planned for 2024: Virtual Can*Con on April 20, and in-person Can*Con November 1-3. Virtual Guests of Honour are Brandon O’Brien, Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki, and Diane L. Walton; in-person Guests of Honour are Jennifer Brozek, Sarah Gailey, Diana M.
