2023 Jhalak Prize Shortlists

When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo (Doubleday/Penguin UK) is on the 2023 Jhalak Prize shortlist.

The award seeks “to celebrate books by British/British resident BAME writers” and accepts “entries published in the UK by writers of colour. These include (and not limited to) fiction, non-fiction, short stories, graphic novels, poetry and all other genres.”

The judges for 2023 are Haleh Agar, Anthony Vahni Capildeo, and Monisha Rajesh. The prize awards £1000 to each winner, along with “a unique work of art created by artists chosen for the annual Jhalak Art Residency.”

The Jhalak Children’s & YA shortlist also features titles and authors of genre interest, including Rebel Skies by Ann Sei Lin (Walker) and Mia and the Lightcasters by Janelle McCurdy and illustrator Ana Latese (Faber & Faber). The judges for the Children’s & YA category are Yaba Badoe, Maisie Chan, and Irfan Master.
