Penguin Random House UK is giving its lowest-paid employees (those making £30,000 or less) a five percent raise and a one-time bonus of four percent of their salary in order to address inflation. Those who earn £30,000-£50,000 will receive five percent raises and a one percent payment; employees who make £50,000-£80,000 get a four percent raise and a one percent payment; and those who get more than £80,000 can expect a two percent raise. Their director of human relations, Val Garside, told The Bookseller, ‘‘Our annual pay review discussions with the union were detailed and positive, and we are pleased that they have accepted our company offer. We understand that the economic climate is difficult and so we have worked closely with the union to determine a pay award that balances support for colleagues while making the right decisions for the company, given the complicated and challenging external environment.’’
Hachette Livre (parent company of Orbit) released a plan to reduce their carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030, with ‘‘a 30% reduction in the proportion of books that are shredded, a 26% reduction in carbon intensity of paper manufacturing, an 18% reduction in carbon intensity of book printing and binding, and 1% and 1.5% annual reductions in upstream and downstream freight respectively.’’ The plan will apply to all the company’s holdings internationally.
