NATO Defense College Call for Submission

The NATO Defense College (NDC) has invited authors from across Europe to “produce a short-written piece on the future of NATO” for inclusion in the forthcoming NATO 2099: A Graphic Novel.

In 2024, NATO will celebrate its 75th anniversary. It is expected that this milestone will lead to an avalanche of analysis on the last decades, and the possible futures for the Alliance. As NATO’s premier educational institution, NDC should contribute to the debate – but, true to its research mantra, originally and uniquely that helps current and future decision-makers to adapt quickly to new environments and challenges their thinking.

For this reason, our main starting point is contacting several authors (one author from each member state), particularly science fiction writers interested in producing a short story of what the year 2099 would be like for NATO: the conflicts it had been through, the mistakes it made, and the successes it had. These would be codified for common themes which then would be turned into one common story.

Authors are asked to submit works of up to 1,500 words. The contest is open from now until November 15, 2023, and the publication is scheduled for May 2024.
