Cixin Liu Museum Opens in China

Cixin LiuA museum dedicated to science fiction author Cixin Liu has opened in Yangquan, China. Ceremonies were held on October 13, 2024, as part of Yangquan’s second annual Liu Cixin Hometown Science Fiction Culture Week.

Liu, author of The Three-Body Problem, The Wandering Earth, and other influential works, took to the stage with local officials. In his commemorative speech (reported here), he said, “I hope that science fiction can bring readers more joy and awe, allowing them to touch the stars.”

The Liu Cixin Sci-fi Museum will provide exhibits and educational experiences about the works, career, and influence of Liu, as well as SF as a whole. It features futuristic architecture, astronomical projections, and displays about the genre’s world history, with plaques on Isaac Asimov, Ursula K. Le Guin, and more seen here. Liu’s 2015 Hugo Award trophy for Best Novel for The Three-Body Problem is also on display.

Liu grew up in Yangquan, in the Shanxi province, and his work is honored around the area. The Niangziguan Power Plant, where he worked as an engineer, is now an art attraction with murals depicting his works, and the Liu Cixin Studio was recently opened. On a panel during the festival, Liu described the importance of Yangquan to the growing trend of autonomous vehicles: the city/prefecture was the first in China to “fully embrace” self-driving cars, taxis, and buses.
