2024 Jhalak Prize Longlists
Both the 12-title Jhalak Prize for Book of the Year and the Children’s & Young Adult prize longlists were announced today.
The awards “seek to celebrate books by British/British resident BAME writers” and “accept entries published in the UK by writers of colour. These include (and not limited to) fiction, non-fiction, short stories, graphic novels, poetry and all other genres.” The prize awards £1000 to each winner, along with “a unique work of art created by artists chosen for the annual Jhalak Art Residency”.
The Jhalak Children’s & YA Longlist features a number of titles and authors of genre interest, including Koku Akanbi and the Heart of Midnight by Maria Montunrayo Adebisi and Simone Douglas (Orion Children’s), Wild Song by Candy Gourlay (David Fickling Books), Friendship Never Ends by Alexandra Sheppard (Knights Of), and Geoffrey Gets The Jitters by Nadia Shireen (Puffin).
The judges for the Children’s & YA category are Danielle Jawando, JP Rose, and Rashmi Sirdeshpande.
The shortlists will be announced April 18, 2024, and winners on May 30. For more information, including the Jhalak Prize longlist, see the Jhalak Prize website.
