Small Beer Press Hiatus

Small Beer Press has announced that it will not open to submissions or publish any new books for the foreseeable future. Publisher Gavin Grant cited health complications from COVID-19 as the reason for the hiatus. He said, “In 2022 we only managed to publish two books. This year we published four and here at the end of the year I see how much these books missed the old me.”

Small Beer plans to keep its books in print or sell them on to other publishers. It has also announced a forthcoming limited edition of Kelly Link’s The Book of Love. No announcement has been made regarding the future of Small Beer’s magazine, Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet.

Sorry to hear this news. Small Beer has been a stellar independent press for spec fic since 2000. I have Ray Vukcevich’s Meet Me in the Moon Room (2001), which collects his tour de force “Quite Contrary” (Pulphouse 1994). I taught the story several times as flash fiction. Another I have is John Kessel’s The Baum Plan for Financial Independence & Other Stories (2008). Their little magazine, Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, has a reputation in the literary community, & is read by editors of The Best American Short Stories (with several stories shortlisted on its “distinguished” lists). Many authors would never have collected their short work without this press. It has been a force for good in our community.
