Pulitzer Prize Expands

Starting in 2025, the Pulitzer Prizes for books, drama, and music will be open to “US citizens, permanent residents of the United States,” and authors who’ve made the United States “their longtime primary home.” Under the old rules, only US citizens were eligible for the awards, except in the history category (where non-citizen authors were welcome as long as their books were about US history). “For the sake of consistency,” history book authors must now conform to the new rules as well. Eligible titles must still be “originally published in English in the United States.”

The Pulitzer board co-chairs, Tommie Shelby and Neil Brown said, “The Board is enthusiastic about ensuring that the Prizes are inclusive and accessible to those producing distinguished work in Books, Drama and Music. This expansion of eligibility is an appropriate update of our rules and compatible with the goals Joseph Pulitzer had in establishing these awards.”
