Somtow Wins 2022 Thai National Artist Honor

Thai composer, conductor, and SFF writer Somtow Sucharitkul has been selected as a 2022 National Artist by the Thai National Committee for Culture. Honorees were chosen for being “forerunners of Thai arts and culture”, and “[reflect] Thailand’s richness in art and culture.”

Somtow was recognized in the Performing Arts category for his work as a composer of contemporary music. Upon receiving the award, Somtow said, “To be honored as a national artist, I feel very grateful and honored in my life. It also opens many doors… The most important thing is to pass on knowledge to the next generation.”

Winners were announced at a ceremony at the Cultural Center of Thailand in Bangkok. Each winner receives a pin and shield presented by the King of Thailand in a special ceremony, and each artist’s work will be showcased in a public exhibition.

I appear to be a conducting with a miniature light saber, meaning that this photo that Locus found must be from my concert some years back where I played music from ALL of the Star Wars movies that had been released up to that time…
