Nick Wood (1961-2023)
Writer Nick Wood, 62, died in June 2023.
Nicholas Wood was born in 1961 in Kitwe, Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia), and grew up in South Africa and the US before settling in the UK. He began to publish SF with “African Shadows” (as Nicholas Wood) in 1999, and made his first professional sale to Interzone with “God in the Box” (2003). His debut novella, young-adult The Stone Chameleon, appeared in 2004. Some of his short fiction was collected in Learning Monkey and Crocodile (2019). First novel Azanian Bridges (2016) was a finalist for the Campbell Memorial, Sidewise, and British Science Fiction Awards. His latest novel is Water Must Fall (2020). He was a founding member of the African Speculative Fiction Society, and was instrumental in organizing the DisCon III program stream devoted to speculative fiction by Africans.
