GREGORY BENFORD, 82, had a stroke on December 22, 2022. While his condition is serious, he has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center, and is reportedly recovering well.
WALTER MOSLEY, 71, won the 2023 Diamond Dagger Award, presented by the Crime Writers’ Association. The award is the highest honor offered by the group, and ‘‘recognises authors whose crime writing careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a significant contribution to the genre.’’ Mosley will be honored at a gala ceremony to be held July 6, 2023.
JOHN SCALZI is the winner of the 2023 Robert A. Heinlein Award, given for ‘‘outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space.’’ Winners are chosen by a committee of SF authors chaired by Michael F. Flynn, and receive a certificate plaque, a sterling silver medallion, and two lapel pins, all featuring the likeness of Robert A. Heinlein. The award will be presented at Balticon in Maryland on May 26, 2023.
LYSTRA ROSE’s The Upwelling (Hachette Australia) won the Prize for Indigenous Writing and We Who Hunt the Hollow by KATE MURRAY (Hardie Grant Children’s) won the Prize for Writing for Young Adults in the 2023 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, announced February 2, 2023. They will each receive A$25,000.
REBECCA PODOS’s From Dust, a Flame (Balzer + Bray) won the 2022 Children’s and Young Adults Bloggers’ Literary Awards (the Cybils) in the Young Adult Speculative Fiction category, and The Mirrorwood by DEVA FAGAN (Atheneum) won for Elementary/Middle Grade Speculative Fiction.
