SLF Grant Recipients
The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) announced several grant recipients.
María Isabel Álvarez won the 2019 Gulliver Travel Grant, which gives $1,000 annually to cover airfare, lodging, or other travel expenses. Honorable mentions were Michaux Dempster, Claire Holroyde, and Jenni Zellner.
Del Sandeen won the 2019 Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grants. The Diverse Writers Grant is “intended to support new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, such as writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, etc. — those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing/publishing process.” The Diverse Worlds Grant is given “for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.” Each grant is for $500, made possible by donations from Faye Bi and Ellen Wright. Diverse Writers honorable mentions were Angela M. Sanchez, Nigel Stone, and Jazmyn Taylor. Diverse Worlds honorable mentions were Sibylla Nash, Angela M. Sanchez, and Amanda Wenger.
Lynne MacLean and Michael Simon are the winners of the 2019 Older Writers Grant, which gives $1,000 to writers “fifty years of age or older at the time of grant application, and is intended to assist such writers who are just starting to work at a professional level.”
The SLF also announced a new grant application schedule, beginning in 2020:
January – March: Older Writers Grant and A.C. Bose Grant for South Asian Speculative Literature
April – June: Diverse Worlds and Diverse Writers Grants
July – September: Gulliver Travel Grant
October – December: Working Class Writers Grant
For more information, or to apply, see the SLF website.
“Sir Spacediver 3020” by artist and animator Sofiia Melnyk was chosen as the SLF’s 2020 Illustration of the Year, to be used on the SLF website, marketing material, and social media throughout 2020.
While you are here, please take a moment to support Locus with a one-time or recurring donation. We rely on reader donations to keep the magazine and site going, and would like to keep the site paywall free, but WE NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT to continue quality coverage of the science fiction and fantasy field.
Can someone please tell me what a SLF grant can be used for? Is it just for writing? Can I start a soup kitchen with it? What are the requirements for using the money?
