2019 National Book Awards Longlists

Longlists for the National Book Awards (NBA) in the Fiction, Young People’s Literature, and Translated Literature categories have been announced, including titles of genre interest.

The Fiction category includes Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James (Riverhead), The Need by Helen Phillips (Simon & Schuster), and The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead (Doubleday).

The Young People’s Literature category includes Pet by Akwaeke Emezi (Make Me A World) and Out of Salem by Hal Schrieve (Triangle Square).

The Translated Literature category includes The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa, translated by Steven Snyder (Pantheon) and Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones (Riverhead).

Longlists for nonfiction and poetry were also announced.

The 2019 fiction judges are Dorothy Allison, Ruth Dickey, Javier Ramirez, Danzy Senna (chair), and Jeff VanderMeer. The 2019 Translated Literature judges are Keith Gessen, Elisabeth Jaquette, Katie Kitamura, Idra Novey (chair), and Shuchi Saraswat. The 2019 Young People’s Literature judges are Elana K. Arnold, Kristen Gilligan, Varian Johnson, An Na (chair), and Deborah Taylor.

Finalists will be announced October 8, 2019, and winners will be announced at the National Book Awards Ceremony and Benefit Dinner on November 20, 2019 in New York City. Each finalist will receive a prize of $1,000, a medal, and a citation; each of the category winners will receive $10,000 and a bronze sculpture.
