All the lists I know anything about had a lot of very strong contenders. The AH one certainly did; UNHOLY LAND is interestingly weird, and — a personal note — I’ve lived in the are where it’s set. THE CALCULATING STARS was boffo. I didn’t like MACHINES LIKE ME as much, because the robots weren’t as non- or -unhuman as I think they should be, but it’s the one I expected to win. I haven’t read THE IRON CODEX or THE WORLD ASUNDER yet, but I intend to.

Not that I didn’t deserve it, you understand… 8-). BLACK CHAMBER and its sequels are the best straight-up alternate history I’ve done.

But I wouldn’t have felt it was a travesty if any of the others had won. After ‘moi’, my votes would have been a split decision for the Tidhar and the Kowal, with McEwan in third.
