Comics publisher DC is retiring their Vertigo imprint, created in 1993 to publish edgier and more adult content, including Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Stardust, Bill Willingham’s Fables, Chris Roberson’s iZOMBIE, Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta, and many other works by authors of interest. The imprint will “sunset” at the end of 2020. DC is reorganizing all of its content under three new age-specific imprints: DC Kids (for readers 8-12); DC (for readers 13+, and featuring most of their existing superhero properties), and DC Black Label (for readers 17+). Publisher Dan DiDio says, “We’re returning to a singular presentation of the DC brand that was present throughout most of our history until 1993 when we launched Vertigo to provide an outlet for edgier material. That kind of material is now mainstream across all genres, so we thought it was the right time to bring greater clarity to the DC brand and reinforce our commitment to storytelling for all of our fans in every age group.”
