Last-minute gifts: Subscriptions
When I was around ten years old, my dad gave me a subscription to my first magazine, Reader’s Digest. With two older siblings, I mostly got hand-me-down everything, including books, and didn’t get many brand new things that were just mine. That magazine coming in the mail every month was a big deal.
If you’re like me and haven’t quite finished your holiday shopping, don’t forget about subscriptions; maybe there’s someone on your list who’d really love a subscription to a fiction magazine. It’s a great gift, particularly for readers new to science fiction and fantasy or unfamiliar with the fiction magazines; it’s affordable; and it lasts all year. Asimov’s, Analog, F&SF, and Realms of Fantasy are all great options, along with a slew of others listed here. There are also lots of online magazines, some of which have subscription options.
And a last reminder to shop at your local independent bookseller — they especially need these holiday sales!
Happy holidays!
