Earthlight to Close

Simon & Schuster UK is closing its SF/F imprint Earthlight, effective the end of 2003, as part of an extensive restructuring of its Adult Trade Division. Senior Editor Darren Nash will be leaving by the end of September. The company press release says Earthlight's authors will be taken over by the S&S and Pocket lists, "where they will be given the same profile and commitment as before" and "enjoy the benefits of belonging to the main body of the fiction list." The restructuring involves laying off about 75 people worldwide, about 60 of them in the US, the remainder in Britain.

Darren Nash joined Simon & Schuster in 1998, and took over the Earthlight imprint in August 2002, after the departure of John Jarrold, who launched the imprint in April 1998.

Earthlight authors include Kevin J. Anderson, Ray Bradbury, Terry Brooks, Lois McMaster Bujold, Richard Calder, David Farland, Jon Courtenay Grimwood, Robert Holdstock, Jane Johnson, Guy Gavriel Kay, Paul McAuley, Ian McDonald, Michael Moorcock, Christopher Priest, Harry Turtledove, Freda Warrington, and Walter Jon Williams.

Website The Alien Online has this story about the news, and this reaction from Earthlight founder John Jarrold.
