Anne Rice's Merrick (Knopf) is the genre news this week, debuting on six lists, as high as #2 on three of them, including NYT. Another debut this week: George Saunders's The Very Persistent Gappers of Fripp (Villard), a children's book by the award-winning surrealist writer, illustrated by Lane Smith. The paperback of the second volume in Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy, The Subtle Knife, has appeared on Amazon's list this week, while the first volume has dropped off. New on prepublication lists in the UK: Ken MacLeod's next novel, Cosmonaut Keep. Not tracked, but noted: the paperback of Left Behind has reappeared on a couple lists with the release on videotape of the first Left Behind film, which in an odd reversal won't be released in theaters until next year. It’s #9 at USAT, #3 at Amazon. The $1 Dover paperback of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is #10 on the LAT’s paperback fiction list this week.
