Faith of the Fallen and Ship of Destiny were solidly ahead of all the other hardcover nominees. L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s Scion of Cyador (Tor) was the new runner-up. We had 83 nominees, up slightly from 80 last month.

Dune: House Atreides completely dominated paperbacks, and A Civil Campaign had no near contenders for the number two position. New runner-up: Starfist: Technokill by David Sherman & Dan Cragg (Del Rey). Nominees: 91, down from 98.

All Tomorrow's Parties was the trade paperback that finally edged Cryptonomicon out of first place, though not by much, with The Year's Best Science Fiction: Seventeenth Annual Collection just one point behind at number three. New runner-up: The Dreams Our Stuff is Made Of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World (Touchstone), by Thomas M. Disch. Nominees: 49, down slightly from 52 last month.

''Star Wars'' again dominated media, taking three of the top five spots, with ''Star Trek'' taking the other two. Hero's Trial got more than twice the votes as the next nominee. Nominees: 32, up slightly from 27.

The top gaming-related contenders were within just a few points of one another, with ''Forgotten Realms'' The Spine of the World hanging on to number one for the third month in a row. Nominees: 34, up moderately from 25.
