The Storytellers: Henry Lien Reads from Peasprout Chen

We are so happy to release our fifth episode of The Storytellers, our series of Zoom-recorded author readings! Previously, we had Daniel Abraham read ‘The Wind’. Today we are pleased to show Henry Lien reading from the first chapter of Peasprout Chen: Future Legend of Skate and Sword, the first in his middle grade series revolving around a sport of his own invention combining kung fu and figure skating: Wu Liu.

Henry Lien is a multi-talented Taiwanese writer of novels, short stories, and songs. Peasprout Chen has been nominated for multiple awards and is a Taiwanese-inspired middle grade fantasy series about a young girl’s quest to become a champion of Wu Liu, and rise to the top of her academy amidst rising tensions and rivalries. The story takes place in a fantastical world where students harness energy from qi and are joined by spirit animals. Henry has also created multiple songs to accompany the series, all of which you can find on his YouTube channel. Henry has been nominated for several Nebula Awards, a Hugo, and has co-hosted our very own Locus Awards!  His work has been published in Asimov’s, Analog, Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, and more. Henry Lien’s newest title, Spring, Summer, Asteroid, Bird: The Art of Eastern Storytelling, delves into Eastern structures and methods of story. He also teaches at the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, Writing the Other, and Clarion West. He was awarded Outstanding Instructor of the Year by the UCLA Extension Department of the Arts. You can find all of Henry’s imaginative work at https://henrylien.com/
