PEN Translates Winners, Jan. 2025
The 19 winning titles for the January 2025 PEN Translates awards have been announced. The awards are given to works translated from other languages into English, “on the basis of outstanding literary quality, the strength of the publishing project, and their contribution to UK bibliodiversity.” Many of the works are forthcoming for 2025 and 2026.
Winning titles and authors of genre interest include:
- Hell of Solitude: Selected Writings by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, trans. from Japanese by Ryan Choi (Prototype)
- Wild Boar, Hannah Lutz, trans. from Swedish by Andy Turner (The Emma Press)
- Species of the Chthulucene, Maria Ptqk, trans. from Spanish by Nicolas Salazar Sutil (Lawrence Wishart)
- Paprika, Yasutaka Tsutsui, trans. from Japanese by Helen O’Horan (Gollancz)
Launched in 2012, PEN Translates has supported “over 390 books translated from over 90 languages, awarding over £1.2m in grants.”
There are two submissions periods for PEN Translates: April–May (with awards decided in December) and October–November (with awards decided the following June).
This season’s list includes two winners from the inaugural PEN Translates x SALT round for works of South Asian literature, in partnership with the SALT project at the University of Chicago.
