New York Public Library Best Books and Top Check Outs

The New York Public Library (NYPL), the Brooklyn Public Library, the Queens Public Library, and others have released their annual lists of most-borrowed books. The 2024 announcement features a list of books tabulating check outs for the combined boroughs.

On the “Citywide” list, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (Knopf) was the most checked out book for the combined boroughs of New York for 2024. Third place was taken by Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (Entangled), Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (Ecco) came in eighth, and Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (Morrow) was ninth.

The NYPL also released their Best Books of 2024 lists, which are curated by the librarians, with Adult, Kids, Teens, and Los mejores libros nuevos para pequeños categories.

The fifty-title Adult category includes a number of books and authors of genre interest, such as The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark (Tordotcom), The Mercy of Gods by James S.A. Corey (Orbit), A Sunny Place for Shady People by Mariana Enríquez (Hogarth), Hum by Helen Phillips (Marysue Rucci), Sacrificial Animals by Kailee Pedersen (St. Martin’s), and more.

The 50-title Teens list features many books of interest, including Traci Chee’s Kindling (Harper), Rob Costello’s anthology We Mostly Come Out at Night (RP Teens), Yoon Ha Lee’s Moonstorm (Delacorte), Makiia Lucier’s Dragonfruit (Clarion), R.M. Romero’s Death’s Country (Peachtree Teen), and more.
