2024 SFPA Poetry Contest Winners

The Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association has announced the winners of its annual prize for poetry. Poems were judged in three categories, listed below.

Dwarf Category (10 or fewer lines):

  • WINNER: “Whirlpool” by Colleen Anderson
  • Second Place: “She Reveals Herself” by Tabor Skreslet
  • Third Place: “Perpetual Care” by Christopher Ripley Newell
  • Honorable Mentions: “Desert Skies Motor Hotel” by Mark C Childs, “Haiku 6” by Tom Rogers, “dragon child” by Felicia Martínez

Short Category (10 to 50 lines):

  • WINNER: “i watch shelley duvall’s faerie tale theatre when i am afraid of what’s to come” by Kailey Tedesco
  • Second Place: “Inter-dimensional Bodice Ripper (Paperback, $1.98 + tax)” by Kailey Tedesco
  • Third Place: “Reading Arthur C. Clarke, Sipping Hot Cocoa” by Jonathan Pessant
  • Honorable Mentions: “Last Minute of Reentry” by Brian Richards, “Wine tasting on the planet Ufahamu*” by Miguel O. Mitchell, “when i die” by Corey Niles

Long Category (50 or more lines):

  • WINNER: “A Maiden’s Grimoire” by Fija Callaghan
  • Second Place: “Stasis in Hyperdrive” by Clarabelle Miray Fields
  • Third Place: “Panopticon” by F. J. Bergmann
  • Honorable Mentions: “The Moons of TOI-1231 b” by Deborah L. Davitt, “The Hologram La Divina Considers What It Is to Be a Monument on the Moon” by T.D. Walker, “Dust Storm Montage (International Women’s Bioresearch Outpost, Gorgonum Chaos, Mars)” by Kate Boyes

The winning poems were announced on the SFPA website, along with commentary from contest judge Stephanie M. Wytovich. The contest chair was Angela Yuriko Smith.

The SFPA Contest awards unpublished poems from both SFPA members and non-members. Cash prizes are awarded for first, second, and third place. The next contest will be open from June 1 – August 31, 2025. See the SFPA Contests page for more details and updates.
