Gaiman Allegations
Author Neil Gaiman, 63, has been accused of sexual assault by two women in a podcast produced by British tabloid Tortoise Media; Gaiman reportedly ‘‘strongly denies’’ the allegations.
The podcast, titled Master: The allegations against Neil Gaiman, was released in July 2024. One account comes from a woman going by ‘‘Scarlett,’’ now 23, who was hired as a nanny at Gaiman’s home in New Zealand, and alleges that ‘‘Gaiman sexually assaulted her within hours of their first meeting’’ when she came to work on her first day in February 2022. According to the podcast, she reported the assault to New Zealand police in October of that year and their investigation remains ongoing. In response to requests from media, the New Zealand police said they cannot confirm whether or not there is an investigation due to privacy laws.
The other claim comes from a self-described fan who was involved in a brief relationship with Gaiman in 2005 when she was 20 years old, alleging abusive and nonconsensual acts.
The podcast reports that Gaiman told them that both relationships were entirely consensual; that Scarlett experienced a medical condition that caused false memories during their relationship; that he believes the second woman’s claims stem from regrets about their relationship; and that he offered to cooperate with the New Zealand police.
Gaiman declined to comment for our story.
