2024 Sturgeon Symposium Updates

The Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction has announced a date change for the third annual Sturgeon Symposium, now to be held October 24-25, 2024 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence KS. (The previously announced dates were October 17-18.)

The theme of this year’s symposium is “Stars in Our Pockets: Celebrating Samuel R. Delany.” The Symposium will feature Noël Sturgeon’s presentation of the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best science fiction short story and a reading from this year’s winner as well as panels and discussions that touch on Delany’s work and impact. We are also delighted that Delany has accepted our invitation to attend, and we anticipate his participation in several events.

We invite papers, panel proposals, and roundtable discussions that engage with Delany’s work and influence. Creative submissions that draw inspiration from Delany’s work are also warmly encouraged, including speculative narrative, poetry, and visual art. Please share widely and consider submitting a proposal. Due date for proposals is May 31.

The Center also recently announced that author and editor Kelly Link has joined the jury for the Sturgeon Award.
The Sturgeon Award, established in 1987, is one of the premier awards for excellence in short science fiction. It honors the late Theodore Sturgeon, whose influential works spanned the golden age of sf to the New Wave and helped define the field. The award is presented annually to the author of the best short sf story published the previous year.
Link won the Sturgeon Award in 2016 for story “The Game of Smash and Recovery”. Other jury members are Elizabeth Bear, Sarah Pinsker, Noël Sturgeon, and Taryne Taylor.
