* de Botton, Alain The Consolations of Philosophy
(UK: Hamish Hamilton 0-241-14009-9, £14.99, 265pp, hc, March 2000)
The author of How Proust Can Change Your Life applies the thoughts of famous philosophers, including Socrates, Epicurus, Nietzsche, etc., to problems of modern life. The chapter on Schopenhauer and love was adapted for an article in the New York Times Magazine a few weeks ago. The book served as the basis for a UK TV series, ''Philosophy'', and is #5 on the Times of London's bestseller list this week. Amazon UK has a review by David Vincent. * Eldredge, Niles The Triumph of Evolution…and the Failure of Creationism

* Gould, Stephen Jay The Lying Stones of Marrakech
