Best of 1999: New York Times Book Review
The science fiction titles on the New York Times Books Review's long list of Notable Books of the Year are as follows. Books are selected from among those reviewed since December 1998. The SF titles, listed alphabetically by title, were presumably chosen by NYTBR SF reviewer Gerald Jonas.
- Christopher Priest, The Extremes (St. Martin's)
- Kim Stanley Robinson, The Martians (Bantam Spectra)
- Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Talents (Seven Stories)
- Peter Watts, Starfish (Tor)
- Madeleine E. Robins, The Stone War (Tor)
Titles on the much longer fiction & poetry list include Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, A.S. Byatt's Elementals, Julian Barnes's England, England, Salman Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Thomas Harris's Hannibal, Martin Amis's Heavy Water: and Other Stories, Ann Arensberg's Incubus, Christopher Buckley's Little Green Men, Sylvia Brownrigg's The Metaphysical Touch, Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn, Stewart O'Nan's A Prayer for the Dying, Steve Erickson's The Sea Came in at Midnight, and Kurt Andersen's Turn of the Century.
Children's selections include J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
The 11 Editors' Choice: Best Books of 1999 include fiction works by Annie Proulx, J.M. Coetzee, Michael Frayn, and Roddy Doyle, and one book about science among the seven nonfiction titles, Antonio R. Damasio's The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness.
