Best of 1999: Amazon.co.uk

The British online bookseller Amazon.co.uk has posted its own lists of the best books of 1999. The science fiction and fantasy titles are:

  1. Terry Pratchett, The Fifth Elephant
  2. Peter Hamilton, The Naked God
  3. William Gibson, All Tomorrow's Parties
  4. Terry Pratchett, et al, The Science of Discworld
  5. Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon
  6. Orson Scott Card, Ender's Shadow
  7. Raymond E. Feist, Krondor: The Assassins
  8. Stephen Baxter, Time
  9. Vernor Vinge, A Deepness in the Sky
  10. Mary Doria Russell, Children of God

There is no horror category, but the crime/thriller/mystery list includes Thomas Harris's Hannibal in first place, Iain Banks's The Business 6th, and Stephen King's Hearts in Atlantis 10th.

Amazon.co.uk's overall Best Books of 1999 list of 23 titles puts J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in first place, with Thomas Harris's Hannibal second and Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant 14th. Also on the list: Iain Banks's The Business 7th, Simon Singh's The Code Book 8th, Salman Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her Feet 15th, J.M. Coetzee's Booker Prize winning Disgrace 19th, and John Naughton's A Brief History of the Future 22nd.

The third Harry Potter book also leads the children's books of 1999 list, which also includes Brian Jacques's The Legend of Luke 2nd and Philip Pullman's I Was a Rat! 9th.

The literature and fiction list puts Salman Rushdie's book at #6 and Thomas Harris's at #10.

Simon Singh's The Code Book leads the science and nature list, followed by Steve Jones's Almost Like a Whale and Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe.
