Obituaries

Howard Browne, 91, editor of Amazing and Fantastic magazines in the 1940s and '50s, died October 28, 1999, in Carlsbad, California. Browne also wrote for TV and movies, and wrote crime novels under the pseudonym John Evans. He won a Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America in 1985.

Irish fan Walt Willis died in Belfast, Ireland, at the age of 79 on or shortly before October 20, 1999. Willis won a Hugo in 1957 as Best Fan and was Fan Guest of Honor at the 1992 Worldcon. He published various fanzines, including Slant and Hyphen, often in association with fellow Irish fans (and later professional SF writers) Bob Shaw and James White. With Shaw, Willis produced the infamous fan fiction ''The Enchanted Duplicator''.
