Intern with Locus!

About this Job

Job Title: Internship for Locus magazine and the Locus Science Fiction Foundation

Job Function: Arts (applied), Literature, Computer Technology, Journalism, Library Sciences/Museology, Publishing, Marketing

Duties and Responsibilities: Locus seeks interns, ideally with a passion for science fiction, fantasy, horror, and related fields (SFF); or interest in publishing and/ or library sciences. We are open to interns for a general publishing administrative role as well as interns specifically interested in our digitizing project.

We endeavor to match roles to an individual’s strengths to provide an environment of learning and useful contributions. We have a variety of daily tasks including helping with the magazine, email and phone communications, research, html development, office support, digitizing the 50-plus year archive of Locus magazine included in the Locus Photo and Ephemera Collection, and much more. (If you are just interested in helping out, see: Volunteer With Locus!)

For those specifically interested in Library Sciences/ Digitizing: The Locus Science Fiction Foundation (LSFF) is involved in an ongoing effort to digitize and preserve the Locus Collection of 60 years of reporting in the science fiction and fantasy publishing field, including 55 years of Locus: The Magazine of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Field. There are thousands of photos; letters written by prominent science fiction authors between 1954 and now; and author interviews and reviews dated from 1954 to now. Notable authors represented in the collection include Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Neil Gaiman, Ursula K. Le Guin, and many others, all of whom have been recognized as pillars of the industry over the years. The collection offers a complete historical account of the evolution of this genre over the course of the last 60 years and emphasizes the lives of the authors, editors, and publishers of the works themselves. These photos and ephemera elements are invaluable as they provide a more complete understanding of the history of science fiction, and the individuals who created it.

If you are interested in the digitizing project you should be detail-oriented, have the ability to learn and use computer scanning materials (ABBYY Fine Reader and Adobe Acrobat), and have a desire to work in the science fiction publishing industry.
