SFFH on Bestseller Lists 20 March 2000
|
Michael Crichton's Timeline and Dean Koontz's False Memory each holds on to one or two lists, while having dropped off other lists weeks or months ago. That leaves, aside from the Harry Potter books, Seamus Heaney's new translation of Beowulf as the fantastic-themed book on the most general bestseller lists this week.
A new V.C. Andrews book, Rain, is being tracked even though we're not sure if it's actually a fantasy or horror book, not having read (or even closely looked at) it. Similarly, perhaps we should have been tracking the Tom Clancy/Martin Greenberg book SSN, a collection of World War III scenarios, which has been on paperback bestseller lists for a few weeks now. (It's not a new book, but a reprint of a 1997 trade paperback.) This week it ranks #4 at both NYT and WP, #10 at PW, #22 at USA Today.
New this week: The paperback of Terry Goodkind's Soul of the Fire debuts on three lists this week, the highest at PW, at #12. A novelization of a TV miniseries, The Tenth Kingdom, places 8th on Amazon's paperback list. A runner-up on NYT's paperback list, at #26, is John Vornholt's Star Trek, The Next Generation: Gemworld: Book One of Two.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list).
The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
= same as last week
+ or - with number: difference since last week
+ back on list
++ new on list
x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)
() below cut-off but noted anyway
Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and BookSense. All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.
