SFFH on Bestseller Lists
14 February 2000

Amazon.co.uk has updated its SF bestsellers list this week, but not Amazon.com (US). The SF-genre lists of the online booksellers are highly volatile -- when they are updated. B&N's consists mostly of Robert Jordan paperbacks, but which ones change from week to week.

Dean Koontz's False Memory (Bantam) retains its #1 slot this week at LA Times, and its #6 slot at NY Times, but slips on all other lists. Most SFFH hardcovers on the general lists slipped by one this week, with the debut of John Grisham's The Brethren on most lists, often in the #1 position.

The paperback of Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is new on a couple lists this week. A new Star Wars paperback, with a four-part title, also debuts on a couple lists. Mervyn Peake's The Gormanghast Trilogy hits #1 on Amazon.co.uk's SF list, presumably the influence of the BBC version currently being broadcast.

BookSense has restricted its children's list back to 5 books this week, from 8 last week, pushing the Brian Jacques book, and one Harry Potter edition, off this week's list.

Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon slipped out of the top 15 Amazon.com fiction hardcovers several weeks ago, but it still hovers just below, this week at #19. Similarly, his Snow Crash clings to Amazon.com's paperback fiction list at #20.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list), and 10th or higher on SF genre lists (last three columns). The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com (general lists), and BookSense; then SF lists from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Barnesandnoble.com.

All the general lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated. The SF genre lists (last three columns) rank hardcovers and paperbacks together.
