SFFH on Bestseller Lists
21 February 2000

This week Amazon.co.uk updated its SF bestsellers list, but not Barnes and Noble, while Amazon.com (US) has been stale since the week of January 10th. Perhaps we'll stop tracking these genre bestsellers if they are not reliably updated each week. (See Locus Magazine for extended monthly compilations from Amazon.com and B&N/B. Dalton, as well as from Waldenbooks, separated into the same hardcover, paperback, trade paperback, media-related and gaming-related categories as the Locus Bestsellers lists compiled from specialty stores.)

The Harry Potter books continue their reign with only slight moves up or down from week to week, barely perturbed by the coming and going of more fleeting books. Dean Koontz's False Memory and Michael Crichton's Timeline are the only other genre books figuring prominently on general lists, though Brian Jacques's The Legend of Luke holds on in last place on a couple lists.

In paperbacks, Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon leaps to #2 on the LAT list, and remains on two other lists from last week. King's The Green Mile continues strong on several lists, as does its movie version at the box office. The only other notable change is the appearance of Michael Stackpole's Star Wars book on three more lists this week.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list), and 10th or higher on SF genre lists (last three columns). The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com (general lists), and BookSense; then SF lists from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Barnesandnoble.com.

All the general lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated. The SF genre lists (last three columns) rank hardcovers and paperbacks together.
