As usual, this Ellison book is a bibliographers nightmare. It follows the 1974 NAL edition which was somewhat revised in contents, and has some other revisions which seem to be new to this edition.
- * *The Essential Ellison (Nemo Press 0-914261-01-0, Aug 87 [Jul 87], $29.95, 1019pp, hc) Collection of many, many stories and essays, edited by Terry Dowling, Richard Delap, and Gil Lamont. This is ment as a 35-year retrospective (its taken 3 years to publish) of Ellisons work, from his early 1949 juvenilia to his work in the 80s. Its not a best of, but a warts and all collection, divided into 15 sections with introductions to each one by one of the various editors. The texts of every item have been corrected, but not rewritten. It isnt a book you sit down and read as much as you browse it. It isnt even reviewable except as a book-length study of Ellisons life. Its a well made book despite its size, and should stand up to years of use even throwing across a room. A bargain at twice the price. Recommended. (CNB) A limited edition ($60) was announced, but has apparently not appeared yet. (Contents)

The complete introduction and preface appear here for the first time. Illustrated by Ken Snyder, this is a signed, numbered, 582 copy limited edition. In an age of signed limited editions costing several hundred dollars, its a pleasure to find a modest, but well reproduced one at a modest price. (Contents)
- * *The Harlan Ellison Hornbook (Penzler Books 0-89296-239-9, Nov 90, $22.95, 418pp, hc) Collection of 52 essays, all but four written between 1970-1976, plus an introduction and a closing essay by Ellison and a foreword by Robert Crais.
