SFFH on Bestseller Lists: 10 July 2000
|
The new Harry Potter book, given the time lag for published bestseller lists, won’t show up on this page for a week or two. In the meantime, the UK first edition of David and Leigh Edding’s The Redemption of Althalus has, remarkably, debuted at #1 on both the Times of London’s, and Amazon UK’s, hardcover fiction lists.
This week's chart removes the BookSense column, because the BookSense site is undergoing redesign and the current bestsellers are apparently not available to non-members.
In its place is added a column for Amazon UK. Its fiction (and nonfiction) bestseller lists extend to only 10 places, and rarely include SFFH titles, but another change this week adds not-yet-published (NYP) titles from rankings on both Amazon and Amazon UK (which calls its list “pre-publication”). Remarkably, many titles on both lists, and most on the UK list, are SF, fantasy, or horror. Note that Amazon includes YA hardcovers and paperbacks (such as the Harry Potter books) on these lists, but not, once the books are published, on the fiction hardcover and paperback lists. (To make matters even more confusing, NYP titles are included, already, in both sites' genre bestseller lists.) You too can pre-order NYP books via the links provided…
Harry Potter #5 (projected publication in July 2001) is #5 this week on Amazon UK's pre-publication list!
The New York Times is scheduled to institute a new children’s bestseller list shortly, to keep Harry Potter 4 and its kind out of competition with adult hardcover fiction books. The Los Angeles Times dropped the Harry Potter books from its hardcover fiction list several months ago, without comment. The LAT publishes an occasional children’s bestseller list; for July 9th, Harry Potter editions occupy positions 1,2,3, and 5; Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea (Bantam) is #6; Louis Sachar’s Holes #7; and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague (Scholastic) #10.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list).
The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
= same as last week
+ or - with number: difference since last week
+ back on list
++ new on list
x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)
() below cut-off but noted anyway
-- previously noted anyway but now nowhere in sight
nyp Not-yet-published (pre-ordered)
Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate general [nonfiction] lists (gen), children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.
