The Pillars of Creation dominated the hardcover list, more than 100 points ahead of the next contender. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring (Houghton Mifflin) was the new runner-up. We had 93 nominees, up substantially from 71 last month.

Shadow of the Hegemon led the paperback category by a solid margin. Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan (Tor) was the new runner-up. Nominees: 79, down from 91.

Tolkien titles easily took the top five slots on the trade paperback list, led by The Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien's The Return of the King (Houghton Mifflin) and True Names and the Opening of the Cyber Age edited by Vernor Vinge & James Frenkel (Tor) tied for new runner-up. Nominees: 58, down one from last month.

Babylon 5: The Passing of the Techno-Mages, Book III: Invoking Darkness had a solid lead in the media-related category. Nominees: 34, off from 37.

Forgotten Realms: The Siege headed gaming-related titles by a good margin. Nominees: 36, well up from 22.
