David Brin still leads the hardcovers, but Robinson's Antarctica also made a good showing in its first month on the list; Anne McCaffrey continues to have a book here and (with co-author Ball) another series book among the paperbacks. New runner-up is The Temple and the Stone by Kurtz & Harris (Warner Aspect). Nominees: 89, up from last month's 81.

Dan Simmons has a strong lead for paperbacks, and David Drake is here as both author and co-author of strong sellers; new runner-up: Reckoning Infinity by John Stith (Tor). We had 121 nominees, to last month's 119.

The trade paperback editions of the Year's Best anthologies both did well, but the posthumous Bester/Zelazny novel leads. New runner-up: Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover (Del Rey). Nominees: 60, just up from 59.

For media tie-ins, the latest Star Wars book, by Allston, has a substantial lead. New runner-up: Babylon Five: Point of No Return by Jane Killick (Del Rey). There were 39 nominees, to 42 last time.

In gaming-related books, the new Battletech is on top. We had 26 nominees, to 24 last month.
