More Lists: Take That, Modern Library
Inspired by Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels, separate surveys of librarians and booksellers have named Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as the favorite novel of the 20th century.
The booksellers' list was coordinated by Koen Book Distributors and appears on its website at http://www.koen.com/top100.html. The librarians' list will appear in the November 15th issue of Library Journal and is on the magazine's website at http://www.bookwire.com/ljdigital/roundups/hundredbest.htm.
The lists are discussed in this USA Today article.
J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the highest ranking SF or fantasy work on the two lists, placing 3rd with librarians and 10th with booksellers. George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four placed 7th with librarians and 6th with booksellers. Modern Library's board-selected list included Orwell's novel in 13th place, but omitted Lee and Tolkien. The Readers Poll sponsored by Modern Library placed Tolkien, Lee, and Orwell in 4th, 5th, and 6th places -- the only three of that poll's top 10 not by Ayn Rand or L. Ron Hubbard.
Science fiction and related genres fare well on both the librarians' and booksellers' lists.
