KEY

The table shows the current rank of each book and the change since last week, where:

= same as last week

+/- change since last week

+ back on list

++ new on list

x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

SFFH Books on General Bestseller Lists
posted 19 August 2008

The big debut this week is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Acheron (St. Martin's), 12th book in her "Dark-Hunter" series about immortal warriors protecting mankind from demons. It ranks #1 this week on the fiction hardcover lists at New York Times, Washington Post, and Publishers Weekly, and #7 on USA Today's combined list.

Added here this week, though it debuted on lists a week or two ago, is Brunonia Barry's The Lace Reader (Morrow), ranking this week among the top 10 fiction hardcovers at NYT, WP, and PW. It's about mind-readers and fortune-tellers in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, but the backstory is at least as good: a self-published novel that sold to a major publisher and became a bestseller. (Here's an NPR interview with the author.)

Meanwhile, Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn still ranks #1 on Amazon lists (though as YA it doesn't qualify for some of the print lists), while her adult novel The Host remains in the top 10 fiction hardcovers on three of those print lists.

And summer reading programs have put Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and George Orwell's Nineteen Eight-Four back among the top 150 on the USA Today list.
