2022 National Book Awards Finalists

Finalists for the National Book Awards (NBA) in the Fiction, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature categories have been announced, including titles and authors of genre interest.

The Fiction category includes The Birdcatcher by Gayl Jones (Beacon).

The Translated Literature category includes A New Name: Septology VI-VII by Jon Fosse, translated by Damion Searls (Transit); Jawbone by Mónica Ojeda, translated by Sarah Booker (Coffee House); Seven Empty Houses by Samanta Schweblin, translated by Megan McDowell (Riverhead/Penguin Random); and Scattered All Over the Earth by Yoko Tawada, translated by Margaret Mitsutani (New Directions)

The Young People’s Literature category includes The Ogress and the Orphans by Kelly Barnhill (Algonquin Young Readers), All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir (Razorbil), and Maizy Chen’s Last Chance by Lisa Yee (Random House Books for Young Readers).

Publishers submitted 463 books for the Fiction award; the judges are Ben Fountain (chair), Brandon Hobson, Pam Houston, Dana Johnson, and Michelle Malonzo. There were 296 submissions for the Young People awards; the judges are Becky Albertalli, Joseph Bruchac, Meghan Dietsche Goel, Jewell Parker Rhodes (chair), and Lilliam Rivera. Publishers submitted 146 books for the Translated Literature award; the judges are Nick Buzanski, Veronica Esposito, Ann Goldstein (Chair), Rohan Kamicheril, and Russell Scott Valentino.

Winners in all categories will be announced at the National Book Awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. For more information, including the complete list of finalists, see the National Book Foundation site.
