SFWA Approves New Membership Eligibility Requirements

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) has voted on five revisions to the membership eligibility qualifications.

The Board of Directors stated:

As previously announced, the new membership eligibility requirements, across all membership categories (e.g., prose, game writing, comics, etc.), are intended to set Associate membership eligibility at $100 earned professionally and Full membership at $1000 earned professionally over a career, attested by sworn affidavit.

Additionally, with this change, a full catalog of works (prose and game writing in one application, for example) can be submitted for consideration instead of having to meet our current entry requirements in only one category. This recognizes that income streams are diversifying for creators, and provides a single and clear path to membership.

They conclude with “We’d like to thank our members for making SFWA stronger, allowing us to widen our gates and better hear and listen to every voice traversing the many different paths to science fiction and fantasy professional publication that creators take today.

The changes will be rolled out over the next 24-48 hours.

Thanks. I might qualify now, but instead of digging through my records of the past 5 years, I’ll wait and apply when my first check comes for my novel publishing this summer.
