All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

Locus Online was on vacation last week, without easy Internet access, and so this page compiles those lists still accessible, or deducible (in the case of USA Today), as of today, the following Monday, 9/15 -- the three Amazon lists are excluded, as are lists from Washington Post, which do not seem to be accessible via its website's archives. A page for this week's rankings will be posted tomorrow. (Update 16 Sept: the San Francisco Chronicle list for 9/7 is now included.) The notable debut of the week is Terry Brooks' The Gypsy Morph (Del Rey), ranking impressively at #2 on both the New York Times and Publishers Weekly fiction hardcover lists. In paperback, Michael Reaves second "Coruscant Nights" Star Wars novel, Street of Shadows (Del Rey), debuted at #21 on the New York Times mass market paperback list, and #109 on the combined USA Today list.
