All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

Jim Butcher's White Nights (Roc), latest in his "Dresden Files" novels about Chicago wizard-detective Harry Dresden, debuts impressively on 4 print lists this week, #5 on New York Times' fiction hardcover list, #4 on the lists at Washington Post and Publishers Weekly. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Children of Hurin (Houghton Mifflin), due in stores today, ranks #1 or #2 on the three Amazon lists compiled here. The trade paperback of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winner and Oprah-pick The Road is #1 or #3 on all five print lists for trade paperbacks this week, and the hardcover still ranks #39 on Amazon's list today. With the death of Kurt Vonnegut, sales of his books have resurged; among others, the trade paperback edition of Slaughterhouse-Five ranks #12 today on Amazon, #23 on Amazon Canada. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows remains #1 or #2 on the three Amazon lists this week.
