Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's December Issue interview with James Morrow.

morrow

For me, the great irony of our time is that even as Bush is denouncing Darwin, condemning stem-cell research as blasphemy, and encouraging what he calls 'faith-based initiatives,' his administration is hoping against hope that something resembling a rational, secular, post-Enlightenment republic will emerge in Iraq. It's a towering irony.

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's November Issue interview with China Miéville.

mieville

SF and fantasy are inheritors of visionary literature, and science fiction is simply one fuzzy set of that modern pulp wing of visionary literature which describes its vision through a sometimes spurious, sometimes accurate vocabulary of scientific rationality. But SF is about is that kind of ecstatic vision.

•   Locus Magazine: Cory Doctorow Commentary

The March of the Polygons:
How High-Definition Is Bad News for SF Flicks

cory doctorow

HD is poison for special-effects movies. Whatever sins are hidden in a standard-definition 12-inch TV set are thrown into stark relief by big, crisp displays. Whatever longevity can be wrung from a movie by releasing it to smaller, more forgiving screens is cut short by the living-room behemoths that are being pushed on us today.

Faith is almost antithetical to spirituality, not just in religious matters but in many others. When people have faith in their country, in their political party, in their leaders, it causes them to act in a way that can be controlled by others. That behavior comes out of a kind of laziness, where they don't examine the reasons why they do things. Doubt is a magical thing, doubt comes from God's hands and everything good that happens comes out of it, so it can't be inimical to spirituality.

•   Locus Magazine: Mary Anne Mohanraj Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's October Issue interview with Mary Anne Mohanraj.

mohanraj

Transitioning from a mainstream story to a fantasy story is a difficult thing to do. I haven't figured out how to write within a fantasy framework while maintaining the level of realism that I need in my fiction. Right now my agent tells me probably the best career move is to solidify my mainstream fiction, and then I can write all the fantasy novels I want. Go the Michael Chabon route: win a Pulitzer first!

•   Locus Magazine: James Patrick Kelly Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's September Issue interview with James Patrick Kelly.

kelly

I think science fiction is the most important writing there is today, because it tackles the largest issues fearlessly. These thought experiments get repeated, over and over again. Not that there isn't entertainment value in science fiction as well -- you've got characters and plots and beautiful writing, and I'm certainly not one who says the idea is more important than the story. The ideas are the story, and the story can't exist if there are no ideas to explore.

•   Locus Magazine: Ken MacLeod Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's September Issue interview with Ken MacLeod.

macleod

The whole notion of extrapolation is one of those pseudoscientific pieces of gobbledygook that science fiction writers use to justify themselves. Science fiction doesn't really extrapolate; it explores and experiments. Attempts to use science fiction to project a particular political view often end up very preachy and not very convincing as writing.

•   Commentary from Locus Magazine

Cory Doctorow: How Copyright Broke

cory doctorow

The Internet is a machine for copying things cheaply, quickly, and with as little control as possible, while copyright is the right to control who gets to make copies, so these two abstractions seem destined for a fatal collision, right? Wrong.

mcdonald The more research I did, the more I thought, 'There's a huge gaping hole in science fiction. A lot has been done about China, but people have been overlooking India.' When do you ever see an Indian on Star Trek? There are Chinese all over the place, but you never see an Indian.

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's July Issue interview with Peter Straub.

•   Locus Magazine: Joe Hill Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's July Issue interview with Joe Hill.

joe hill When I started to experiment more with stories that were surreal and fantastic, I felt more excited, involved, and morally invested. It's a good thing to let your freak flag fly, to follow your instincts and write what you want, not what you think other people would like.

•   Commentary from Locus Magazine

Cory Doctorow: Science Fiction is the Only Literature People Care Enough About to Steal on the Internet.

cory doctorow As a science fiction writer, no piece of news could make me more hopeful. It beats the hell out of the alternative — a future where the dominant, pluripotent, ubiquitous medium has no place for science fiction literature.

•   Locus Magazine: Christopher Priest Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's June Issue interview with Christopher Priest.

priest I strongly believe that reading isn't a passive activity. To somebody who doesn't like books, just sitting around and reading looks as if you're doing nothing, but actually you're active. Readers should be made to work a bit and they shouldn't take anything for granted. For me, the unreliable narrator keeps people alert.

•   Locus Magazine: Betsy Wollheim Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's June Issue interview with Betsy Wollheim.

wollheim In some ways Sheila and I still have old-fashioned values as publishers. We own the company and we are extremely loyal to our authors. I think we recognize we are DAW: we’re like its mama bears, and we protect our company. We take everything personally, but we also love our authors and fight for our books with ferocity.

•   Locus Magazine: Jay Lake Interview

Locus Online excerpts Locus Magazine's June Issue interview with Jay Lake.

lake I made a decision in December of 2000. After I went to my first Orycon I got hooked up with Wordos, the writers' group in Eugene. It meets weekly, and I decided (for no good reason that I can now remember) that I was going to take a story into the workshop every week. So I got on this kick of writing a story every week, and I've done that ever since.

A lot of YA is about identity: 'Who am I?' 'How do I fit into this world?' There's that uncomfortableness in your skin. And if you're a science fiction writer or reader that never goes away, because you're still looking at the world and challenging it, saying 'Does it have to be this way? My new book is hugely autobiographical. When I was writing it I thought, 'I'm going to be honest about what goes on inside my head, just on the off-chance it goes through a lot of other people's heads as well.'

...and with Elizabeth Bear:

I write my science fiction and fantasy exactly the same way: I try to be very rigorous and create logical structures. Science fiction is this great big chessboard, a game where you're moving stuff around, breaking it to see what happens. It's the literature of testing to destruction.
