The story selections are notable for including very little from the traditional SF/fantasy magazines -- two stories from Asimov's, one from Interzone, but nothing from F&SF or Realms of Fantasy. This says less about the weakness of those magazines, perhaps, than the extent to which fantasy and horror -- much moreso than science fiction -- pervade literary culture.

One of the great time travel fantasies (and among the all-time best fantasy novels according to the 1998 Locus Poll). The hero has a heart attack at age 43, dies, and awakens in his 18 year old body in 1963. His memories intact, he relives his life, avoiding mistakes and becoming rich. But then he dies again. What begins as a wish-fulfillment fantasy becomes richly complex, with surprises up to the very end. Highly recommended.
