This has a new foreword by Nancy Willard, and an 1876 afterword by Carroll, “An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves Alice”. There is an unpaginated four-page Reading Group Guide.

Alice’s Adventures under Ground Lewis Carroll & Kim Deitch (Word Play/Cottage Books 1-892847-01-9, Aug 2000, $17.95, 84pp, tp) [Alice] Reprint (Macmillan 1886) children’s novella, with new illustrations by Kim Deitch. This is the early version of Alice in Wonderland, handwritten and illustrated by Carroll in 1864, first published in facsimile by Macmillan in 1886; this is the first publication as a separate, type-set book. The book’s history is discussed in the foreword by Mark Burstein. A trade hardcover edition (-00-0, $29.95), and a signed (by the artist), limited edition of 250 (same ISBN, $60.00) were announced but not seen. Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll & Lisbeth Zwerger (North-South Books 0-7358-1166-0, Oct ’99, $19.95, 101pp, hc, cover by Lisbeth Zwerger) [Alice] Reprint (Macmillan 1865) children’s fantasy novel, in oversized picture-book format, with new illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger. This may be the first English-language edition with these illustrations, which are copyrighted by Nord-Sud Verlag, Switzerland.


Callisto Lin Carter (Pocket/ibooks 0-7434-0005-4, Jun 2000, $14.00, 418pp, tp, cover by Steranko) [Callisto] Omnibus of the first two fantasy novels in the “Callisto” series featuring adventurer Jon Dark: Jandar of Callisto (1972) and Black Legion of Callisto (1972).
