• Russell Letson reviews it in the August issue of Locus Magazine: "This book satisfies the claims that SF has to being an art form as fully engaged with the worlds of the family and the community as it is with those of the laboratory, the machine shop, the space habitat, or the computational environment. Egan's aliens and post-human personalities are engaging, sympathetic, and understandable creations. When he turns his attention to ordinary humans, living in a world that is just around the corner from our own, he will break your heart." The full review is posted here.

Opening lines:

Martin stared anxiously at the four crates full of vinyl LPs in the corner of the living room. A turntable, amplifier and speakers sat on the floor beside them, their cables draped in dust; it had been three weeks since he'd sold the shelving unit that had housed the components. The records would be far too heavy to take with him on the plane to Iran, and he didn't think much of their chances if sent them separately as surface freight.

Opening lines:

It was that time of day that should be inviolate, one of the rare moments in life when everything is going perfectly. I leaned back in the armchair and turned on the room-sized stereo -- woofers the size of locomotives, tweeters that vibrated the teeth in your head -- and J. S. Bach's toccata and fugue saturated the air with beauty.
