All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

Week ending 29 September 2009

Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry (Scribner) was released in stores today, and already ranks notable on all three Amazon lists, as high as #19 on the UK list today, #25 on Amazon.com. And there's more from Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters (Quirk), co-written by Ben H. Winters, is #19 on the New York Times trade paperback list, and #100 on the combined USA Today list. Two books from Tor/Forge debut on this week's extended New York Times fiction hardcover list: Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory's The Phoenix Transformed at #21, and F. Paul Wilson's Ground Zero at #28.
